Disabled boy studies to forget the pain

A disabled boy in central Nghe An Province needs financial support to fulfil his ambitions to study.

Loc's studying corner

Tran Van Loc was born in a medical centre at Village 11, Nghi Kieu Commune, and weighed just one kilogram. He was diagnosed with multiple congenital anomalies. He has endured acute malnutrition due to his illnesses and, at age fourteen, he weighs just 14kg. His head is too heavy for his body and tilts to one side, and he has problems speaking.

Loc's mother, Dau Thi Hoa, said her son lost his left eye after a fall when he was trying to walk home from school.

"He may lose his right eye too because the eyelashes are not growing normally and scratch his cornea. It hurts me that he suffers so much, but I don't know what to do," Hoa said. "We cannot afford the medical care he needs, but he is very brave and is always happy no matter how much pain he is in."

Loc's father, who was the sole breadwinner for the family, recently contracted tetanus and the family had to sell what was left of their meagre possessions to pay for his treatment.

Loc said he loves going to school and reading books, but knowing his family situation, he asked his parents to stop buying him books. "I'm good at history. While I can't see what my teachers write on the board, I can understand what they say in class and I remember it all."

His mother is sad that her son may not be able to continue his education. During bouts of illness, he gets upset because he can't go to school. Despite suffering chronic pain, he tries to sit up so he can read his books.

"I don't feel the pain when I'm reading," he said. "Whenever I'm in pain, I'll read and the numbers the words will ease away the pain."

Help from friends and the school have enabled him to keep up with his lessons. Loc wants to become a journalist and write articles to help poor people.
